The name of this stream comes from a Native American chief named Nance. She was a woman from the Muscogee Indians. When the first Treaty of Indian Springs was signed in 1821, 4.3 million acres of Creek territory was gained. This included the future city of Atlanta.

Peachtree Road, which is now W. Paces Ferry Road, was once a major thoroughfare into Atlanta. Originally, it ran from Standing Peachtree on the south side of Peachtree Creek to Peachtree Road on the north side of the creek.

In the 19th century, a portion of the trail was transformed into a major thoroughfare. In fact, the segment that passes by the site of Little Nancy Creek Park may have been part of the original trail that was bypassed in 1814.
