How Did the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center Come About?
The Callanwolde was a Tudor-style home that belonged to Charles Howard Candler and his family. It was completed in 1920. Howard Candler was the oldest son of the founder of the Coco-Cola Company, known as Asa Griggs Candler. Howard Candler was also the president of the same company between the years of 1916 and 1923.
What Is the History of the Candler Family?
As mentioned above, the Callanwolde was home to the Charles Howard Candler family between the years of 1920 and 1959. Asa Griggs Candler was first a pharmacist in Atlanta who bought the rights to the Coca-Cola formula back in 1891. This formula had been developed by another pharmacist that also worked in the city. His name was John Pemberton, and he specialized in creating solutions to some of the most common ailments back in that time.
Howard Candler went to various elementary schools in the city and acquired a Bacher of Arts degree later on from Emory College. This college is an institution that was originally located in Oxford. When he was in Oxford, Howard Candler’s father gave him a keg of Coca-Cola syrup. After that, he shared this with his peers in school. This was the first sighting of the popular beverage.
After he graduated in 1898, he went to the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons. He attended for two years, then went on to attend the University of Bellvue Hospital Medical College. Later on in his life, he got another degree from Emory University. By that time, in 1942, Emory University had already relocated to Atlanta.
Now that Howard Candler has finished his education, he wanted to settle down and start a family. This was when he met Flora Harper Glenn in 1903. Soon after, they married and had three children together. Their children were Catherine Harper, Charles Howard, Jr., and Mary Louisa.
How Did the University, Family, and Coca-Cola Tie Together?
The ties to Coca-Cola and the Howard Candler family have caused residents to give Emory University the name “Coca-Cola U.” Back in 1914, Emory College was moved from Oxford, Georgia, to Atlanta. Bishop Warren Akin Candler, Howard Candler’s uncle, was the president of the university at that time. He was also the Chairman of the Methodist Episcopal Education Commission. At that time, the Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta had decided that if the university relocated, they would pledge $500,00. In 1915, Asa Griggs Candler donated over a million dollars to the same institution.
Bank in 1915, a man named Henry Hornbostel, was given the job to redesign the campus of Emory University. This has taken place in the Druid Hills area of Atlanta. A year after, Howard Candler had already become the vice president of the Coca-Cola company. In fact, he had already taken the title in 1906. He held the tile all the way up until he retired in 1923. Henry Hornbostel took his place, which meant that Howard Candler would be the benefactor of Emory University. He began working on his new residence, Callanwolde, a year after.
When 1929 came around, Howard Candler had been named the chairman of the board of trustees of the college. He had this position until he passed away in 1957. Luckily, his family history was continued along with their financial support that went towards the institution. In 1946, he gifted the university with assets that had over fifteen million dollars in value.
Two years after Howard Candler died, his wife donated the estate. She also gave away most of the original furniture to the university. Later on, Emory University sold the property to a Christian church. This church retained ownership of the property until the people of DeKalb County worked to take ownership of the Callanwolde in 1971.
Where Did the Callanwolde Name Come From?
William Candler was a man that worked as an officer in the Cromwell Army. This took place during the Irish Rebellion, a significant historical event that happened in the middle of the 17th century. He served in the regiment of Sir Hardress Waller and was given the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at the end of the campaign. It has been said that he was elevated to this rank because of his “meritorious conduct in the field.”
He took his wife and family to Ireland, where they settled and lived in Callan Castle. His wife, the widow of Captain John Villiers, was named Anne Villiers. Callanwolde was a name that was based on the connection this family had to the Irish town called Callan. The Ole English word “wolde” was another meaning for the word “woods” back in that time.
